Climate change has been defined as the largest existential threat to the survival of our species. Although the fact that the climate is changing due to increasing temperatures—in many cases, for worse—its effects go beyond just the climate system: sea level rise, water security, food security, massive migration, and tropical virus spread, among others, are likely to ensue as the global average temperature continues to rise. Add to that the various humanitarian crises and the inevitable economic shocks, and one can quickly see that climate change is not just about global warming. But climate change is only a symptom of a greater problem: our millennia-long paradigm that we can exploit Nature—and each other—without any consequence. Fortunately, it is preventable, and we are still in time to stall it and reverse its effects. Many solutions are already available, and we don’t need to wait for the government or corporations to do the right thing.
